Quilt Along 3 - All Stacked Up

All Stacked Up II - Bonus August 26 2019

HAVE YOU FINISHED YOUR QUILT TOP? THE FIRST 20 PARTICIPANTS TO BRING IT IN TO THE SHOP (DOESN'T NEED TO BE QUILTED) WILL RECEIVE A SPECIAL LABEL FOR IT.

There is a lot of fabric and a few blocks left over from our All Stacked Up Quilt Along project and rather than just add them to your stash, here is a bonus quilt!

The cutting for this quilt will be done as we go along. There should be 20 - 8½” blocks and approximately an 8” x 20” piece of each fabric remaining...some pieces will be more and some less...not to worry. Your colours will be different than those shown.

Click on the title below to get your free pattern.

ALL STACKED UP II BONUS QUILT

We have 33 Kaffe Fassett bolts of fabric at the shop. The closest guess goes to Kim! Congratulations.

All Stacked Up - Week 5 - Quilt Top Assembly August 12 2019

Congratulations to Jan for winning a prize! Jan, please contact Sue at thimbles & things.

Here are some of the entries:

Marg    Marion    Crystal    Dianne

You will need:

              - the 25 sets of blocks

              - sewing machine with ¼” foot, loaded with a neutral thread

              - large design wall or cleared floor space

              - erasable fabric marking pen, or slips of paper and pins

If you are making the smaller version (64” x 72”) follow steps #9 and #10 on page 6, and the diagram on page 7.

If you are making our larger version (64” x 80”) follow the steps below.

    • Print the following PDF file to use as a quilt layout guide. The colours do not reflect the fabrics in your quilt. Adjusted Layout
    • Choose your 3 favourite sets of squares and lay them out as shown. These will be blocks X, Y and Z.
      • Trying to avoid having the same colours butting together, start building blocks around the above 3 blocks. In each case, one 8½” square will not be used. Set these extras aside for use in our bonus quilt.

          • Keep building! There are 2 single 8½” squares used on the sides. Choose from the extras and slot them in.
          • Walk away.
          • When you come back to the project, critically look at your arrangement. Are similar colours well separated? Rearrange if necessary. Repeat the last 2 steps until you are satisfied.
          • Mark the squares with an erasable fabric marking pen, or slips of pinned paper. The rows being A, B, C etc. and the columns being 1, 2, 3 etc. Therefore the top left corner square should have an A1 label and the bottom right a J8 label.
          • Join squares to make 10 rows. Press seam allowances open.
          • Join the rows. Press seam allowances open.

Congratulations your quilt top is done!

          • Layer the quilt top, batting and backing.
          • Quilt as desired.
          • Apply the binding using your favourite method.

Time  for another chance to win a prize! Guess how many bolts of Kaffe Fassett fabrics are on the shelves at thimbles & things today, August 12th.

Check back in on August 26th to get a free pattern for your extra squares and fabric!

          All Stacked Up - Week 4 - Block Assembly July 22 2019

During the Quilt Along, amounts listed are for our adjusted version (64” x 80”).

           You will need:

                        - the 25 sets of the HSTs, feature and coordinating fabrics

                        - sewing machine with ¼” foot, loaded with a neutral thread

                        - optional: clear spray starch (Best Press® or similar)

Add the Inner and Outer strips by following steps #5 to #8 on pages 5 and 6 of the pattern.

Tips: A light spray of a clear starch like Best Press® on your finished 8½” blocks will keep them from distorting.

Keep your 4 matching blocks together.

Send in a picture of you favourite set of blocks by August 5th.

          You may win a prize!

Step #8 in the pattern is very confusing. We already have 4 HSTs of each colour combination, so make 4 blocks in each set. This way when it comes to assembly, choosing which blocks are featured in the center is easy, as they are already made up. Your colour arrangement will be totally different than mine which makes this project great as everyone’s quilt will be unique.

          Dianne Nahirney July 23 2019 at 08:00AM

So are you saying to just make up all 4 blocks from each of the 25 sets then . If you read the pattern I am not getting that.i am reading that 5 sats you are just making 2 blocks, 1 set you make 4 blocks and 1 set just 1 block and the rest 3 blocks. For the original size but looking at your finished pic I see 3 sets of 4, 22 sets of 3 and of the 22 sets you nade 2 of them 4

          Wanda July 22 2019 at 03:55PM

Not sure I understand the issue. At the end of this step you will have 25 sets of 4 blocks with each block in the set the same. Some of these blocks will be used for a bonus project so do not appear in this quilt. Hope this clarifies the issue.

          Dianne Nahirney July 22 2019 at 03:52PM

Just looking at your finished product and comparing to step #8 on the pattern and I am thinking we actually need 4 blocks of 3 colors and I block each of 2 colors.

          All Stacked Up - Week 3 - HSTs July 01 2019

During the Quilt Along, amounts listed are for our adjusted version (64” x 80”).

          You will need:

                       - the 25 sets of the feature and coordinating fabrics

                       - the marked squares of background fabric

                       - sewing machine with ¼” foot, loaded with a neutral thread

                       - ruler (no smaller than a 6½” square or a Tucker Trimmer by Studio 180 Design® (recommended)

                       - rotary cutter

                       - optional: rotating cutting mat

                       - optional: clear spray starch (Best Press® or similar)

                       - optional: The Cutting Gizmo by The Gypsy quilter®

Make 100 HSTs by following steps #2 to #4 on page 5 of the pattern.

Tips: When sewing the lines ¼” from the marked line, sew a scant ¼” . This will ensure that there is fabric for trimming.

Chain stitch the squares. The Cutting Gizmo makes separating the units a snap.

The pattern calls for the seams to be pressed open. These seam allowances can also be pressed towards the feature fabric. The choice is yours.

A light spray of a clear starch like Best Press® flattens the pieces nicely for more accurate trimming.

The Tucker Trimmer makes squaring the HSTs easier. For a refresher on how to use the ruler. A regular ruler can also be used. Find one that has a 45° line marked from the corner so your diagonal seam can be lined up on it. Tucker Trimmer

Using a rotating mat lessens the handling of the squares and speeds up the trimming process.

          Keep your sets together.

100 HSTs is a hefty amount, so we are giving you an extra week! Next blog post will be July 22nd. ! Mark your calendar.

All Stacked Up - Week 2 - Sorting and Prep June 17 2019

During the Quilt Along, amounts listed are for our adjusted version (64” x 80”).

          You will need:

                       - the 25 sets of the feature fabrics and the 25 sets of the coordinating fabrics

                       - the squares of background fabric

                       - pins

                       - pencil and ruler

          1. Lay out all of the feature fabric sets so that you can see them all.
          2. Now pair them up with the coordinating fabric sets. There is no rhyme or reason to this pairing, just what pleases you.
          3. Pin them together and set aside.

Tip: Once you have paired the sets, take a break and do something else. Come back to the pairings (even days later!) and take another look. Do you still like them? Make changes if necessary.

          1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all of the background fabric squares.

That’s it for this week. Next blog post will be July 1st. Mark your calendar.

          All Stacked Up - Week 1 - Cutting June 03 2019

During the Quilt Along, amounts will be listed for our adjusted version (64” x 80”).

          You will need:

                       - your fabric collection

                       - a rotary cutter with a sharp blade

                       - cutting mat

                       - a ruler

                       - pins

Tips:     A ruler is much more accurate than the markings on the cutting board, therefore, avoid using the board for measurement when cutting your fabric.

Since we are working with fat quarters, stack 2 to 4 together by lining up the selvage edges. Press.

Cut away a thin strip off the outer edge to ensure a straight edge before beginning to cut your pieces.

                       Cut the larger pieces first.

Feature Fabrics - Half-Square Triangles and Outer Strips

From each feature fabric fat quarter cut:

          2 - 5” squares

          4 - 2½” x 8½” rectangles

          4 - 2½” x 6½” rectangles

Pin a set of 10 pieces of the same fabric together. There will 25 sets.

Keep all remaining fabrics for our bonus project.

          Neutral Fabrics - Half-Square Triangles

Tip:      Press your fabric before cutting. Line up the selvedge edges together and press. Sometimes the manufacturer’s center fold is not accurate. I fold my fabric over a second time (notice the selvage edges are not included) so I can use my Shape Cut®.

          Cut 50 - 5” squares.

Keep all remaining fabric for our bonus project.

          Coordinating Fabrics - Inner Strips

          From one fat quarter cut:

                      12 - 2½” x 6½” rectangles

                      12 - 2½” x 4½” rectangles

          From eleven fat quarters cut:

                       8 - 2½” x 6½” rectangles

                       8 - 2½” x 4½” rectangles

          Pin  4- 2½” x 4½” rectangles and 4 - 2½” x 6½” rectangles of the same fabric together. This is a set. There will 25 sets.

Keep all remaining fabrics for our bonus project.

          Binding:

          Cut 8 - 2½”  x width of fabric strip

Ahh...cutting all done. Next blog post will be June 17th. Mark your calendar.
