Welcome to the thimbles & things’ fourth Quilt Along. We hope you decide to participate, as this is going to be fun! This is a free Quilt Along!
Each installment will guide you through the making of an “Island Chain” quilt by Eye Candy Quilts. Please feel free to ask questions or comment. Your insights may help other participants.
Beginning January 20th, 2020, there will be a bi-weekly blog post on our website to help you stay on track, give you helpful hints and answer any questions you may have.
For the first session, you will need the pattern, which can be purchased at the shop or, ordered and shipped to you here and fabric.
Now lets talk about the fabrics. The quilt pictured on the pattern cover has a neutral background and every block has a different turquoise/green featured fabric, hence the pattern name “Island Chain”. The author must have enjoyed the blue waters of the Caribbean at some point. Your colour choice is personal. Are you an “Autumn in Muskoka” fan? This would be gold, orange, red, brown and some green. How about “A Psychedelic Punch”...a dark background with bright primary colours? Or “Tranquil Time”...a light soft background with honey gold. Then there is always “Scrap Happy”...anything goes! As I say, the choice is yours.
Decide on the size of quilt you are going to make, version #1 - 83½” x 83½” (solid border - not pictured) or version #2 -75” x 75” (pieced border as shown on the pattern cover). Refer to the back of the pattern for Background fabric requirements.
Island Colour fabrics are a little harder to calculate as it depends on how many different ones you use. The pattern designer states that we need a total of 2¼ yd. (2.1 m) of the island fabrics for the blocks and another ⅓ yd. (0.3m) for version 1 and ½ yd. (0.5m) for version 2, but doesn’t tell us how much of each colour. I would suggest a collection of 18 Fat Quarters. This should be enough for 2 blocks of each colour with enough left over for the 9-patches and the borders.
DO NOT CUT YOUR FABRICS.
See you January 20th!
