Sweet Snow Along 12 - Borders

Posted by Wanda Milankov on

The goal this week is to finish the quilt top by adding 2 borders.

You will need:

        - White Solid fabric

        - White Text fabric

        - Charcoal Hand Painted Gingham fabric

        - a long measuring tape

        - pins

The pattern designer's instructions require the top and bottom borders to be added before the sides. For some us, this is the reverse of what we would normally do. Today, we will follow the designer's instructions.

Border 1

From the white solid fabric, cut 6 - 1½" x width of fabric strips.

Measure the quilt top from side to side across the middle and make 2 - 1½" border pieces to this measurement. It should be close to 50½".

Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt and press the seam allowances towards the borders.

Measure the quilt top from top to bottom across the middle and make 2 - 1½" border pieces to this measurement. It should be close to 61".

Sew to the sides of the quilt and press towards the borders.

Border 2

The outer border fabric, which this pattern calls for, has text on it which runs perpendicular to the selvedge. Therefore, the cutting is a little different. If you are not using the directional fabric then cut 7 - 7" x width of fabric strips and add the borders using the same method as we did for Border 1.

If you are using the directional fabric, cut 3 - 7" x width of fabric strips.

Measure the quilt top from side to side across the middle and make 2 - 7" border pieces to this measurement. It should be close to 52½". Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press the seam allowances towards the new border.

From the remaining fabric, which should be close to 55" in length, cut 3 - 7" strips lengthwise.

Measure the quilt top from top to bottom across the middle and make 2 - 7" border pieces to this measurement. It should be close to 74". Sew to the sides of the quilt. Press seam allowances towards the new border.

Quilting and Binding

Layer batting and backing, Quilt as you desire or send it out to your favourite longarm quilter.

From the Gingham fabric or your choice of binding fabric, cut 8 - 2½" x width of fabric strips. Prepare and apply the binding using your favoured method.

CONGRATULATIONS, ALL DONE!

Thank you from thimbles & things (Orillia, ON) and Threads That Bind (Maxwell, ON).  We hope you enjoyed our Quilt Along.

Send us a photo, we would love to see the results. Better yet, send it by April 15th, 2021 for a chance to win a thimbles & things $20 gift certificate.
